Tracking Your Movements
If you are using a Global Positioning System, there is always an outside chance that your movements may be tracked even by some unsavory people. That is why it is important to know how to detect when you are being tracked, as well as detecting GPS trackers in general. But before you can track the trackers, you need to know what a GPS tracker is.A GPS tracker is a device that uses the same satellites used by your Global Positioning System to track the precise locations of a person, or vehicle, or something else of value. While the location data can and is sometimes stored within the tracking unit itself, though often times the data is transmitted to a central hub, usually a laptop computer or internet-based data center.
While some people use GPS tracking as little more than a way to keep tabs on their children, or have a device on their vehicle in case of theft, there are those who abuse this technology. Studying a person's movements over a span of several days can show a pattern in their movements, and give away many places they frequent, including work and even home.
So how can you counteract this? How can you detect a GPS tracking device on your vehicle? The first thing you should do is to take your vehicle in for a full inspection, and to tell the mechanic working on your vehicle to inform you of anything that seemed out of the ordinary. There are other methods, but none of them are as permanent as finding the actual tracking device.
The best bet to detect a GPS tracker would be to use a RF detector. These devices detect the transmission of GPS trackers, but the problem is that you will only detect the tracker if you are scanning at the same time it is transmitting. This means you could spend upwards of 20 minutes scanning for the device. If you do find one, how do you go about removing it?
One popular option for those wanting to block tracker signals is to simply jam the radio frequency of the GPS device. While it sounds like the easy and obvious thing to do, there is one slight setback: It's illegal. Radio jamming devices that would work on the GPS tracker would also interfere with cell phone signals, car radios and even air traffic signals which makes radio jamming a federal offense. In addition to this, most GPS devices have what they call "store and forward" protocols which, if the GPS device can't find a satellite signal, simply saves the location to send later.
